literature meme | [1/2] MOVEMENTS: Modernism

“By the truth we are undone. Life is a dream. ‘Tis the waking that kills us. He who robs us of our dreams robs us of our life.” (Orlando, Virginia Woolf)

“For last year’s words belong to last year’s language
And next year’s words await another voice.” (Little Gidding (Four Quartets), T.S. Eliot)

Literary modernism, or modernist literature, has its origins in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, mainly in Europe and North America. Modernism is characterized by a self-conscious break with traditional styles of poetry and verse. The modernist literary movement was driven by a conscious desire to overturn traditional modes of representation and express the new sensibilities of their time. (×)
